Towards a Smart Sustainable City – Potential and Opportunities for Hong Kong

As the world is close to breaching several environmental limits – from climate change to biodiversity loss – and as urban living becomes the norm, it is increasingly important for cities to be designed and managed in an environmentally sustainable way. The “smart city” approach is regarded as a way to achieve this: to minimise negative environmental impact, whilst also enhancing liveability and well-being as well as capturing business advantage.

As the flagship event of Business Environment Council since 2002, this EnviroSeries conference will explore how a smart city approach can be leveraged to achieve these multiple objectives. We will invite leaders from business and government, policy makers, entrepreneurs and academia from across regions to talk about various aspects of a smart and sustainable city. Our aims are to inspire out-of-the-box thinking and to foster business and government collaboration for a more efficient, competitive and sustainable Hong Kong.

Topics of discussions include:

  • Managing flows: innovation in energy management, transportation, and logistics
  • Managing our assets and resources towards a sustainable circular economy: from buying sustainable products to developing a sharing economy
  • Effective decision-making: smart governance making use of a smart community and big data

Plenary I - Smart city solutions: energy and energy management 

  • What are the sustainability benefits in terms of Carbon, AQ, water and waste in optimizing flows and managing the system holistically?
  • How can these be done and what are the role of government and business?
  • How much can be achieved and is there a lot to gain?
  • Using real time data / electronic road pricing / to increase connectivity between means of transport
  • New technologies for building controls
  • Solar Technologies / Smart meters / Smart grid: how does it mange peak demand?
  • Smart routing systems, how can it reduce the impact of the logistics sector?

Part 1 Sustainable and competitive city: smart transportation and green logistics

  • Using real time data / electronic road pricing / to increase connectivity between means of transport
  • Transportation and road design: air quality forecast for a city
  • GPS innovative technologies can help to lower embodied carbon
  • EVS for transports and battery storage: can it achieve multiple benefits
  • Smart meters / Smart grid: how does it mange peak demand?
  • Smart routing systems, how can it reduce the impact of the logistics sector?
  • Using data for logistics

Part 2 Enabling shared services, the trend and benefits of sharing resources and economy

  • What is a sharing economy and why share?
  • How can it contribute to a more sustainable economy and society?
  • How do we manage the negative impact of the transition?

Plenary III - Big data, open data for smart decision-making - smart governance & smart people for urban planning and city development

  • Big data & rich data approaches to infrastructure and service decisions: benefits in optimizing & providing right standard and right services for a sustainable city and efficient economy development
  • Cutting embodied carbon with informing purchases and investments – vehicles to building retrofit
  • Potential interaction between citizen & government to improve efficiency for the benefitsof well-being, our local and global environment
  • The role of government in sharing data & importance to develop appropriate human capital required to enable smart decision-making
