Reducing Hong Kong International Airport's Carbon Footprint Through Multi-Stakeholder Engagement

Mr Mike Kilburn, Senior Manager – Environment, Airport Authority Hong Kong

In 2010, Airport Authority Hong Kong (“AAHK”) pledged to reduce the carbon emissions of Hong Kong International Airport (“HKIA”) by 25% per workload unit by 2015 based on 2008 levels. To achieve this target, AAHK has initiated an airport-wide HKIA Carbon Reduction Programme in which it collaborates with 46 airport business partners. This is important because AAHK accounts for less than half of HKIA's carbon emissions, and working with the business partners has allowed a much larger carbon footprint to be addressed and greater reductions to be achieved. The programme has been strongly supported by the business partners, resulting in a 22.4% reduction up to 2014. The programme has also been recognised as breaking new ground both by the global aviation community and environmental leaders in Hong Kong.

In the coming event, Mr Kilburn will give an overview of the HKIA Carbon Reduction Programme, the latest status and way forward. He will also talk about the importance of multi-stakeholder engagement and its applicability to other multi-tenant facilities and properties.

Followed by sharing from Mr Dennis Hui, Environment, Health & Safety Manager, Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Ltd (HAECO)
