The lack of developable land in urban areas combined with undesirable “grey” infrastructure has become one of the major societal challenges for Hong Kong. In this series, Prof Edwin Chan will walk us through his innovative solution to regenerate urban land use to tackle this key challenge while at the same time creating a liveable city in light of rapid urbanisation. His presentation will cover the following areas:

  • A more rational approach to land-use in order to regenerate urban areas
  • How to use multi-layered space in the built environment to create a liveable and sustainable city
  • How to improve the wellbeing of citizens living in compact cities

Biography

Dr Edwin Chan is Professor at the Building and Real Estate Department and the leader of Land Use Lab. of the Research Institute of Sustainable Urban Development (RISUD), PolyU. He studied Architecture in England and then learnt Law in London and Hong Kong. He obtained his PhD degree from King’s College, London University. He is a Chartered Architect/ Surveyor/Engineer and also a Barrister. He has been invited as an Adjunct/Visiting Professor of universities in overseas and mainland China, and a Visiting Scholar of the UC Berkeley, USA and the University of Cambridge, UK. He has carried out a wide range of research including: Sustainability policy for built environment; Urban renewal/ heritage conservation which embrace transfer of development rights and social issues; Institutional analysis/Transaction costs for green promotions; and Dispute management. He has published his work in over 130 international journal papers and many book chapters.
