Climate change is an urgent and unprecedented challenge; Hong Kong must transition to a low carbon economy to reduce climate-related risks and to secure sustainable development. Being society’s key players, businesses have a role to play in the low carbon transformation.
In its Climate Action Plan 2030+, the HKSAR Government introduced a 4Ts framework to operationalise the Paris Agreement. The framework highlights the importance of setting decarbonisation targets with timelines. “You can’t manage what you don’t measure”; indeed, businesses setting targets are essential to facilitate the needed decarbonisation. Fundamentally, it is important for businesses to have a vision and strategy to align with a low carbon future.
In 2017, BEC published the Low Carbon Hong Kong: Supporting Business to Set Targets report, which puts forward the business case for setting decarbonisation targets and introduces the methods to do so.
In 2018, building on the introductory report, BEC commenced a focused research and engagement initiative, beginning with businesses in the property and construction sector. The initiative took both “top-down” and “bottom-up” approaches: building top-level support for climate action and building capacity of sustainability professionals on how to set and achieve ambitious decarbonisation targets. Riding on this momentum, the Low Carbon Charter was developed to mobilise concrete and collective action across the property and construction value chain.
At this Low Carbon Charter Launch Ceremony, the Low Carbon Charter will be launched and introduced.
