Investing in Lives and Livelihoods - Addressing the Global Water Crisis through Partnerships and Engagement

Ms. Ellie TANG, Manager Corporate Sustainability, Asia Pacific, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited

By 2025, 65 percent of the global community will live in water stressed areas. Lack of safe water and sanitation has vast economic, social and humanitarian implications. The HSBC Water Programme (2012-2016) is a US$100m partnership with international and local non-government organisations to deliver water provision, protection and education around the world. In particular, the Programme raises awareness of water issues by training employees and public volunteers as “citizen scientists” at over 20 locations globally to support local freshwater research and water quality monitoring. In her presentation, Ms. Tang will introduce the Programme and its regional impacts thus far.

Professor Kin Chung HO, Dean of School of Science & Technology, The Open University of Hong Kong

Over 200 HSBC Hong Kong employees have attended the local “Citizen Science Leader" training and are supporting a freshwater microalgae research conducted by Professor Kin Chung Ho of the Open University of Hong Kong. In the sharing session, Professor Ho will introduce opportunities to become 'Citizen Science Leaders' and act on Hong Kong's water issues.
