Reflecting on the unprecedented disruption the world is facing in recent months, the main objective of this conference is to challenge our conventional wisdom and find an innovative, low carbon approach to recover from the lows of the COVID-19 outbreak. The conference will highlight the tough challenges, extended risks as well as new-found opportunities faced by businesses in such difficult time, and to showcase how corporate leaders are building resilience and adaptability into their business planning and operations for long-term sustainability.

To facilitate discussion, the conference will be structured into 4 main sessions:

Session 1: Decarbonisation amid economic downturn and plummeting fuel price

This session deliberates the prospect of new energy in the light of plummeting fossil fuel price, how the energy market will react and pan out in the short and medium term, the importance of government policy to decarbonise the energy sector, and how that would affect decision makers in the corporate sector from multinationals to small and medium sized enterprises.

Session 2: Investing in a resilient built environment

This session focuses on the built environment – buildings, communities and public spaces, and how innovative approaches and methods such as sustainable construction methods, zero carbon design, people-centric planning, and healthy buildings and places, just to name a few, could contribute to the resilience and wellness of the city. If buildings are the crux of many of our sustainability issues, how can we use it as the focal point to decarbonise and revolutionise the built environment sector?

Session 3: Developing a Future-Ready Workforce

As the imperative to transition to a more sustainable economy becomes more urgent, how can companies prepare their workforce? Thinking through the realities of an ageing workforce, technological transformations and new challenges, businesses will need to examine their talent pool and see whether they have the right skill sets in place to respond to the challenges and opportunities that arise from the low carbon transition. How can companies prepare to identify skill shortages, fill the gaps, and attract/retain next generation talent? Meanwhile, as investors are indicating greater interest in the ESG performance of a company, ESG is moving up the agenda in the boardroom. Board directors need to enhance their ESG competence to be able to reflect on and respond to these demands to provide effective strategic guidance.

Session 4: How the boardroom and investors can lead the way in low carbon recovery

This session concludes the conference by highlighting the major role the boardroom will play at the very top of the corporate world, and how their decisions could be influenced by the demand and expectation of their investors. The drop in consumer demand as a result of COVID-19 caused a significant decline in emissions. Combined with the drop in the oil price, this decline in emissions and the related market volatility has provided a preview of a future scenario which resembles a shock transition as a result of a sudden imposition of regulations which require an immediate cut in emissions. What are the lessons learned from this experience? Are investors looking at the experiences on this period as an indication of potential corporate resilience in the face of instability related to climate change? ESG and green finance as a driver of low carbon recovery/transition in this opportune time will be discussed.
