The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) announced the new HKIA 2050 Net Zero Carbon Pledge in November 2021:
''AAHK and its key aviation-related business partners have committed to achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050, with a midpoint target of 55% reduction in absolute emissions by 2035 against a 2018 baseline.''
The Net Zero Pledge has buy-in from 29 key aviation-related business partners from various sectors. AAHK has been working with the airport community for over a decade to implement two short-term carbon undertook pledges and collaboratively reduce HKIA's carbon footprint. AAHK undertook a comprehensive study to set a third 'airport-wide' carbon pledge which aligns with the goals of the United Nations' Paris Agreement and IPCC's 1.5 degree scenario.
Through comprehensive stakeholder engagement, AAHK enhanced the ''HKIA Business Partners Carbon Support Programme'' to encourage and drive collaboration across the community. The Programme provides initiatives under four main pillars including finance, governance, technology & innovation and capacity building. For the latter pillar, the HKIA CCBP ensures that business partners have the necessary skills to effectively plan and manage carbon reduction initiatives, whilst keeping up with the latest developments in decarbonisation.
