In 2022, Shenzhen announced the "Implementation Plan for the Construction of a Zero Waste City in Shenzhen during the 14th Five-year Plan". The goal is to build a waste free city by 2035, minimising emissions at the source, maximising resource utilisation and eliminating landfill waste by 2035. Shenzhen is actively advancing resource untilisation technologies such as “waste-to-material” and “waste-to-energy” solutions. Notably, it is one of the first cities in Mainland China to implement full-scale incineration of domestic waste, currently operating five incineration facilities,  that process a total of 18,000 tons of waste daily, all adhering to the stringent emission standards.

BEC is organising a technical tour to Shenzhen on 28 February 2025. Participants will visit local enterprises and an energy ecological park to learn about the latest technologies in solid waste and wastewater treatment, as well as engage in discussions with representatives from these enterprises and sustainability experts.

Tour Highlights

•    Assemble at Shenzhen Futian port
•    Visit to the headquarters and project showcase of Forigin (福瑞萊環保科技)
•    Networking lunch
•    Visit to Nanshan Energy Ecological Park (深圳南山能源生態園), meet the representatives of Ecological Park
•    Dismiss at Shenzhen Futian port

Company Profiles

Forigin Decentralized Water Treatment, founded by Maker Institute CAS in 2015, focuses on comprehensive solutions for water safety and water pollution control, integrating R&D, consulting, production, sales, and maintenance. With the mission of "leading the world in the transition to decentralised wastewater treatment" and the vision of "good water and good life", Forigin’s world-class research team combines over 50 proprietary technologies in biology, information and materials science into an advanced water treatment system.

Nanshan Energy Ecological Park, situated in the Qianhai Free Trade Zone in Shenzhen, spans about 9,000 square meters. It processes 950,000 tons of garbage annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 118,750 tons each year. The park has handled a total of 7.15 million tons of domestic waste and 93,000 tons of household food waste, saving 11.45 million cubic meters of landfill capacity. It has generated 2.83 billion kWh of electricity, conserving 1.02 million tons of standard coal and reducing coal-related carbon dioxide emissions by 2.83 million tons. The incineration byproduct is used to make eco-pavers, and various metals are separated and recycled, forming a recycling industry chain with an annual output value of RMB153 million. The park aims to actively contribute to Shenzhen’s zero waste city initiative through actions like incinerating domestic waste for electricity generation, treating and reusing leachate, and recycling slag for eco-pavers.
