Over 300 Companies Join Business Environment Council’s Sustainable Consumption Programme to Foster Sustainable Business Practices in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, 27 July 2018 - According to the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2018 released by the United Nations, sustainable consumption and production policies are a key mechanism for improving living standards without compromising the resources needs for future generations. Today Business Environment Council (“BEC”) held the Award Presentation Ceremony of “Fostering Sustainable Consumption for Hong Kong Business and the Community” Programme in D · Park, Tsuen Wan to recognise outstanding companies and organisations that are committed to provide and choose products and services which have less environmental and social impact. An educational exhibition will also be held alongside to promulgate the concept of sustainable consumption.

Funded by the Government’s Sustainable Development Fund, BEC launched the “Fostering Sustainable Consumption for Hong Kong Business and the Community” Programme in July 2017 to raise public and businesses’ awareness and drive behavioural changes. Companies are invited to join the Programme as a Sustainable Consumption Enterprise or Sustainable Product Supplier. Since its debut, over 300 companies have joined the Programme, and its online sustainable product and service directory has registered over 800 items.

From 28 June to 6 July, BEC encouraged members of public to vote for their favourite outstanding companies. After counting over 3,300 votes, the Sustainable Consumption Enterprise Gold Award went to the Swire Properties Limited, while the Sustainable Product Supplier Gold Award went to the Ocean Park Hong Kong.

“Today marks the first anniversary of BEC Sustainable Consumption Programme. On behalf of BEC, I congratulate the awardees and thank all the participating companies of Sustainable Consumption Enterprise and Sustainable Product Supplier for promoting sustainable consumption in Hong Kong. Individual consumers and business in Hong Kong are major contributors to ecological resources consumption. Other than environmental concerns, provision of products and services with socially responsible manner and benefits to local communities are also crucial elements of a sustainable society. Businesses should go beyond business as usual and the Programme has established a one-stop resources centre in facilitating and encouraging the public to support sustainable consumption.” Mr Adam Koo, CEO of BEC, said.

Besides the recognition scheme, BEC had launched a series of programme items, including the online sustainable product and service directory, BEC Guide on Sustainable Consumption, the mobile app “Guide on Sustainable Consumption Products and Services” and 6 roving exhibitions to raise awareness and encourage committed efforts towards sustainable consumption.
