Hong Kong, 23 May 2017 - Business Environment Council Limited 商界環保協會有限公司 (“BEC”) held its flagship event, the EnviroSeries Conference today at The Mira Hong Kong. Entitled “The Greater Bay Area – Leveraging Opportunities for Hong Kong in the Transition towards Sustainability”, the Conference attracted over 180 participants, including policy makers, industry experts, business leaders and academics, to exchange views in exploring how Hong Kong can make the most of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area initiative to help the area become a world-class, low-carbon economic hub which benefits Hong Kong businesses. Moreover, with the support from Invest Hong Kong, a mini-expo of environmental technology start-ups from Hong Kong was held during the conference to spark inspiration and collaboration for sustainable development in the Greater Bay Area.
“The GBA initiative has been a hot topic of discussion over the past 6 months, but there has been little mention about the Greater Bay Area becoming greener. Today BEC focused on this shift as it creates an opportunity for the Hong Kong business community to develop new ventures whilst at the same time making Hong Kong cleaner and more attractive to work and live in. This is not only of importance for the social well-being of Hong Kong people but also for our economic resilience, helping us identify new business opportunities and retain as well as attract local and international talent.” BEC Chairman Mr Richard Lancaster said in his welcome note.
“We are pleased to have provided this platform for a stimulating and constructive exchange of views about the opportunities from a more connected Greater Bay Area. As the discussions have shown, the new opportunities will not be like the old ones which focused on manufacturing, but in new areas like energy management, integrated waste and energy facilities, and green buildings. Initiatives like Lok Ma Chau Loop offer excellent opportunities to pilot new approaches and develop expertise”. Ms Maya de Souza, Assistant Director for Policy Research of BEC said.
At the Conference, speakers and panels explored ways for Hong Kong businesses to play a role which effectively enhances the quality of life and sustainable development of the cities in the Greater Bay Area, and how they can find new opportunities resulting from an interest in a green and low-carbon city. The areas covered include green low-energy buildings, green finance, environmental services, low emission transport and logistics, waste management and circular economy. Among the speakers and panellists were:
