Hong Kong, 28 March 2018 - Business Environment Council Limited 商界環保協會有限公司 (“BEC”) plays a leading role in advocating the business case for environmental excellence in Hong Kong. Our members are committed to actively engage with the HKSAR Government on a range of issues relating to the environment and sustainability. Jointly supported by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) and BEC, over 80 volunteers from 11 BEC member companies [1] joined hands to facilitate the reusing and recycling of spent resources on the first day of Green Recycling Day (26 March) of Hong Kong Flower Show 2018, avoiding waste to landfills.
Hong Kong Flower Show 2018 is one of the eight major events agreed to follow the Waste Reduction Guidebook for Larger Scale Event Organisers [2] jointly proposed by the EPD and BEC in December 2017. Hong Kong hosts many different types of events every year, generating a lot of waste. The Guidebook suggests that early planning by event organisers plays an important role in effective resources conservation and waste reduction. Proper waste handling and collection measures should be carried out during and after the events. The Guidebook also recommends ways to promote the organisers’ green efforts, including organising on-site promotional activities, making public announcement and conducting a waste audit.
BEC promoted clean and proper recycling methods to the public during two weekends (17-18, 24-25 March) of the Show. To encourage the commercial stalls operators, exhibitors and contractors to achieve waste reduction together, BEC also invited them to join and sign the BEC Green Event Charter. On the first day of Green Recycling Day, volunteers of BEC’s member companies helped assist in separating and collecting reusable and recyclable materials, separate replantable flowers and wilted flowers at the showground, and facilitate on-site distribution of plants to citizens.
All event organisers who are interested in holding a green event and enhancing the waste reduction performance are welcome to contact BEC for advisory service on waste reduction and recycling. Please visit http://www.bec.org.hk for more information.
