Electric Kitchens Setting New Trend for Environmental Protection

To achieve sustainable development, BEC’s Council Member HK Electric encourages the public to consider the future in terms of their lifestyles and impact on the environment. Apart from its initiative of “Eco-Quality Home”, which aims to establish environmentally friendly home practices and improve the everyday quality of living, HK Electric showcased the environmental benefits of electric kitchens to restaurant and catering owners at the biennial trade show HOFEX 2013.

Mr Arthur Wong Yuk-keung, General Manager (Group Commercial), said, “Electric kitchen possesses a number of advantages over traditional kitchen as it keeps the flavour of dishes while reducing emissions, heat waste and noise pollution, creating a more comfortable working environment.”

Themed on “Electric Kitchens – A New Trend for Success”, the Company’s booth displayed both the modern and the traditional kitchens through the use of a time tunnel, allowing visitors to experience how electric kitchens can help restaurants secure saving on energy and operating costs, as well as improving working environment and streamlining processes.

Being put on display were the latest electric kitchen equipment like the new induction low range with surface plate made of ultra strength, energy recovery system and the new-generation electric steam cabinet. A series of live cooking demonstrations were also staged to prepare some of the local delicacies using electric cooking equipment.

Scania is First in Hong Kong to Introduce Euro6, Practically Eliminating Harmful Roadside Emissions

Roadside air quality continues to be a serious concern in Hong Kong, and the main contributor to poor air quality is Nitrogen Dioxide, which is the main component of the Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emitted by internal combustion engines. According to A Clean Air Plan for Hong Kong issued by the HKSAR Government, goods vehicles and coaches account for over 50% of the NOx from the vehicles on Hong Kong’s roads.

BEC’s Corporate Member Scania recently introduced Euro6 engine to Hong Kong, to practically eliminate harmful roadside emissions.

The “Euro” emission standards limit the amounts of NOx and particulates (smoke) that can be emitted by a vehicle. The current standard in Hong Kong is Euro5 but Europe has introduced legislation requiring Euro6 on heavy duty vehicles from 2014.

Euro6 is a dramatic leap forward in emissions reduction compared with Euro5 resulting in reductions on the road in NOx and particulates of over 80%. If all new heavy duty trucks and coaches in Hong Kong were fitted with Euro6 engines instead of Euro5, the reduction in emissions per year for one year of new registered vehicles would be over 500 tonnes of NOx and four tonnes of particulates.

Scania wish to see these vehicles operating on Hong Kong’s roads as soon as possible.
