5 July 2013: BEC Seminar: Achieving Cost Efficiency and Business Sustainability with Green Data Centre

BEC organised a seminar to discuss the greening and energy efficiency enhancement of data centres, and attracted approximately 90 business executives.

Keynote speaker Mr Dale Sartor of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory introduced various practices and latest technologies in the US in enhancing energy efficiency in data centres. Mr Wayne Lee and Mr Derek Fu of IBM outlined the benefits and methods of establishing a cost effective and energy efficient date centre, and the smarter ways in managing buildings and facilities.

25 July 2013: BEC Leadership Networking Series

Over 50 BEC members and guests gathered to explore the challenges and opportunities in managing Hong Kong’s food waste in July’s BEC Leadership Networking Series.

Ir Barry Lee, Chairman of Hong Kong Waste Management Association, shared the current situation in Hong Kong and the practices in other Asian countries. He pointed out that food waste management offered potential business opportunities, but required policy and legislation, public involvement and change in people mindset.

Dr Carol Lin, Assistant Professor of City University of Hong Kong, shared the current research breakthroughs in turning food waste into useful materials and their applications in various industries.

16 July 2013: Industry Visit to Fuji Xerox (Hong Kong) Limited – Recycling Centre

About 20 participants joined the BEC Industry Visit to Fuji Xerox (Hong Kong) Limited - Recycling Centre in Tsuen Wan to learn more about the company’s action in minimising wastage at the various stages in its products’ life-cycle.

The Centre dissembles electronic wastes such as electronic document management equipment, toners and other consumables returned by customers and reuse locally; otherwise divides them into 15 material groups, which are transported to Thailand for further recycling processes. The visit allows participants to have a closer look at the operations and management of the used product materials recovery.

CarbonSmart Programme: Capability Enhancement Workshop – Carbon Audit and Carbon Management Technique

Supported by the Environment and Conservation Fund, the CarbonSmart Programme aims at encouraging industry participation in carbon audit and reduction, and facilitating the development of environmental industries, in order to shape Hong Kong as a low carbon city.

As one of the four organisers of the Programme, BEC co-organised a workshop on 22 July 2013 at the Federation of Hong Kong Industries to introduce carbon management techniques. Moving the Construction Sector towards Sustainable Development Discussion Forum

On 30 July 2013, about 60 members from the construction sector joined the “Moving the Construction Sector towards Sustainable Development” second discussion forum organised by BEC. Participants and facilitators shared insightful views and comments in procurement and sub-contracting aspects. The views collected during the forum will be consolidated for the preparation of “Moving the Construction Sector towards Sustainable Development Guidebook” and a suggestions paper on the sustainable development of construction industry.

29 August 2013: BEC Leadership Networking Series

In August’s Series, Mr Jim Taylor of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited will share the various options of moving towards a lower carbon world. He will also demonstrate the importance of maintaining a safe and reliable supply of power, implementing under a practical timescale acceptable by the community, and managing at a cost that is affordable for the community during the course. Dr Thomas Tang of AECOM Asia Company Limited will also present the recently completed CPD cities survey.

Eco-Practice for the Future of Green Building Forum

BEC General Member LWK & Partners joined hands with The University of Hong Kong and The China Green Building (Hong Kong) Council to organise “Eco-Practice for the Future of Green Building Forum” at St Regis Shenzhen in May 2013. The Forum aims at serving as a communication platform to create a motivational dialogue on green building. It attracted approximately 100 architecture professionals from China and overseas.

Renowned scholars and professionals were invited as speakers to share insightful experiences and case studies. Among them were Tsinghua University Professor Lin Borong, who analysed the synergies between architectural innovations and technologies. Mr Maxime Pruvost, a representative of the architecture studio CAAU, introduced in-depth case studies on sustainable building. Professor Qian Feng from Tongji University also presented an exploration on solar houses.

Following the presentations was a panel discussion hosted by Hong Kong University Professor Stephen Lau, stimulating heated discussions among participants. This Forum was yet another green effort devoted by LWK & Partners, after the “Green Building Label, LEED, and New Trend of Sustainable Building Forum” held on 30 November 2012.

Introduction to Air Pollution Control (Amendment) Ordinance 2013

The Air Pollution Control (Amendment) Ordinance 2013 was passed by the Legislative Council in July 2013 and will come into operation on 1 January 2014. With extensive experience advising on environmental law, health and safety and liability issues; regulatory matters for international clients on China RoHS and WEEE, carbon trading, CDM, global climate change; Environmental litigation matters; liability for polluted land as well as requirements of Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance, BEC’s General Member Mayer Brown JSM addresses the following changes that will take place when the amendments comes into to operation:

• An updated set of Air Quality Objectives (AQOs), set out in Schedule 5 to the Ordinance, will replace the current set of AQOs.

• The Secretary for the Environment (Secretary) must periodically review the updated AQOs.

• The Secretary's power to promulgate AQOs in a technical memorandum, will be repealed.

• A transitional period to provide for the continued application of the current AQOs for applications submitted under the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance (Cap. 499) (EIAO) for variations of the conditions in environmental permits.
