BEC Members Corner

Roundtable Dialogue and Media Tour to Fuji Xerox Eco-Manufacturing Center

Earlier this year, BEC Corporate Member Fuji Xerox held a roundtable dialogue and brought media representatives from Hong Kong and other Asia Pacific countries to Fuji Xerox Eco-Manufacturing Center in Thailand to promote knowledge exchange in:

  • The nature of closed loop product development and resource recovery
  • The environmental and health impacts of poorly managed e-waste
  • The maturity of e-waste programmes
  • Consumer recycling behaviour in Asia
  • How government and industry can better partner to regulate e-waste
  • How the capacity of the recycling industry can be developed to ensure end-of-life product disposal standards are met

During the roundtable dialogue, thought leaders from the United Nations Environment Programme, Thai Government and academia explored the topic of e-waste. Amanda Keogh, head of sustainability for Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific, cited the Fuji Xerox Australia as an example of building a profitable business through parts remanufacturing.

Fuji Xerox Eco-Manufacturing Center serves as a recycling base for sales subsidiaries of the group in six countries and regions, including Hong Kong. Locally, Fuji Xerox (Hong Kong)’s Tsuen Wan Recycling Center collects all locally used Fuji Xerox machines, spare parts and cartridges. The non-reusable parts are separated into 15 categories and shipped to Fuji Xerox Eco-Manufacturing Center for further separating into 88 categories for recycling. The facility achieved "zero landfill"* in 2009.

* Fuji Xerox defines "zero landfill" as simple incineration and simple landfill that is 0.5% or less of the total weight of the waste produced.
