Submission on the 2012-13 Policy Address
A submission paper consolidating opinions from BEC, CCBF and HBF members was submitted to the Chief Executive – Elect Office by hand in late June. The paper expressed opinions of members in the following areas: low carbon economy, energy, air quality, land use, built environment, transport, waste, research and development on environmental technologies, and the harbour authority.
Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Reporting Workshop
BEC will be organising a members-only workshop for the week of 16 July in response to the recent release of the G4 Draft Reporting Guidelines by GRI for public consultation. The workshop aims to discuss potential implications of the new GRI guidelines and members’ interest in responding to the public consultation, and will invite expert speakers that are currently advising GRI to explain G4 and its difference from GRI 3.1. Feedback from members collected in the workshop will help determine whether BEC will submit a formal response to the public consultation.

Member Visit to MTR Kowloon Bay Depot
Thirteen members joined the members-only industry site visit to MTR Depot at Kowloon Bay on 25 June. Ms Jane Wong of MTR showed a video of MTR's history to BEC members, before Mr Michael Chan presented on the environmental measures, including waste water treatment and noise mitigation, that the depot is adopting. Members then walked through the depot and experienced the train washing process.
BEC Events
Professional Talk on ESG Reporting and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)
Executives from diverse sectors and levels gathered and learned more about issues in relation with the Hang Seng Sustainability Index and the HKEx ESG Reporting Guide as well as the background to CDP. In the talk held on 18 June, Mr Hendrik Rosenthal, Director of Policy & Research from BEC, also explained why it is becoming increasingly important for companies in Hong Kong to disclose information to investors about climate change.
Moving the Construction Sector towards Sustainable Development Launching Ceremony
On 6 July, about 100 members from the construction sector joined BEC Chairman and Deputy Director (Development & Construction) in the launching ceremony of a BEC’s new initiative. Aiming at promoting and supporting SMEs in the construction sector to move towards sustainable development, this new initiative will include a series of seminars and focus groups to help identify the needs and challenges of the sector in adopting sustainability practices to ultimately develop a Corporate Sustainability Guidebook.

CCBF Activities
CCBF has had a busy and productive summer to date: working on a building energy efficiency and climate change adaptation research; offering recommendations to the incoming Government in the South China Morning Post and Hong Kong Economic Times on how to implement a low-carbon action plan for Hong Kong; and designing and hosting CCBF member exclusive educational workshops, which include:
24 May │Climate Risk Assessment Tool Demonstration Workshop – Held in collaboration with Deloitte Touche, this half-day interactive workshop introduced an innovative tool designed to help companies mitigate and adapt to the risks and opportunities associated with climate change.
7 June │Cultural Change and Internal Engagement Workshop – Held in collaboration with Edelman, this half-day workshop provided participants with a unique hands-on opportunity to explore barriers and solutions to internal engagement on climate change and sustainability and to learn from global best practice.
26 June │Flygreener: Back to the Basics with Cathay Pacific’s Carbon Offset Programme – Cathay Pacific discussed the nuts and bolts of their carbon offset programme during this morning seminar.
2 August │Social Media Workshop – Social media expert and Kreab Gavin Anderson will answer CCBF members’ burning social media questions during this half-day workshop focused on social media, B2B communications and environmental issues.
BEC Partnership Programmes
HSBC Living Business Capacity Building Events – Supply Chain Sustainability Seminars
Under the theme of this year’s programme, BEC organised 2 seminars on 12 June and 25 June for SMEs to understand the supply chain management approach. The seminars also aim at introducing the sustainability requirements of large corporations, and how companies can create sustainable and innovative products/services through collaboration with clients and suppliers.

BEC will be hosting the 22nd Anniversary Dinner at Conrad Hong Kong. The Dinner is a major celebration of BEC’s progression as we embarked on key initiatives with a vision to continue nurturing our young, connecting our community with business and Government, and facilitating knowledge exchange on a broad range of sustainability issues. It will also be a special occasion to acknowledge and thank everyone who has provided support, guidance and inspiration to BEC.
