Cities are critical to the circular economy, as rising levels of urbanisation and economic growth has led to greater carbon emissions and resource use in these areas. In Hong Kong, the waste disposal rate has continued to grow in the past 5 years, while resource recovery rate has remained consistently low. Recent events like the global pandemic have further burdened the city’s waste management system with an unprecedented disposal of single use items. Globally, circular economy is becoming more recognised as a solution to facilitate better resource utilisation and waste reduction. It is also championed to be able to address cross-cutting issues, including climate change, energy and transport. As such, it is time for Hong Kong to better integrate and embed circular economy principles into the city, in order to stimulate long-term sustainable growth and regenerate the environment.

Mr Adam Koo Mr Koo is the Chief Executive Officer of Business Environment Council. Mr Koo works closely with the Board of Directors of BEC in setting and implementing organisation strategies. He runs BEC’s daily operations, leads BEC’s policy contributions, and ensures BEC’s continuing relevance to bring value to its stakeholders and the community at large. He is the Vice-Chair of BEC’s Advisory Groups. Mr Koo has more than 30 years of executive experience throughout Asia in the private and NGO sectors. He has strong expertise in a broad spectrum of management disciplines, including strategic planning, finance, operations management and business development. Prior to joining BEC, Mr Koo spent four years as CEO of the Hong Kong office of the world’s largest environmental NGO. Mr Koo holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Marketing from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

Dr Christian Hübner Since July 1st, 2019 Dr Christian Hübner is the Director of the Regional Programme Energy Security and Climate Change in Asia-Pacific of the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation (KAS) based in Hong Kong SAR/PR China. Before, he has been the Head of the Regional Programme Energy Security and Climate Change in Latin America of the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation (KAS) based in Lima, Peru. Prior to this position he has worked as Coordinator for environmental, climate and energy policy within the KAS department of European and International Cooperation in Berlin. His thematic priorities are energy transition policy, geopolitics of energy security, economic evaluation of climate policy instruments and Blockchain-Technology. The three years before joining the foundation Christian Hübner has been research associate at a research institute of the Leibniz Association. There, as a trained economist, his focus has been on environmental economic analysis of ecosystems.

Ms Ming Cai Chung Ms Ming Cai Chung is currently Officer – Policy & Research at Business Environment Council (BEC). She is part of the Policy & Research Team that focuses on a range of research and business collaboration projects, policy submissions and advocacy, publications, and events on topics relating to climate change, buildings energy efficiency, transportation, and resource management. She is currently involved in a variety of research projects, including “Circularity Assessment of Hong Kong” and “Zero Waste Design for Buildings in Hong Kong”. She also provides secretariat support to BEC’s Circular Economy Advisory Group. She holds a Master of Environmental Technology from Imperial College London, and Bachelor of Arts (Geography) from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Ir Professor Daniel M. Cheng BBS, MH, JP Ir Professor Daniel M. Cheng BBS, MH, JP is the Managing Director of Dunwell Technology (Holdings) Limited, he is the Honorary President of Federation of Hong Kong Industries and the President of Hong Kong Environmental Industries Association, Board member of Business Environment Council and Deputy Chairman of Hong Kong Green Strategy Alliance. He is also serving as Member of The Chief Executive’s Council of Advisers on Innovation and Strategic Development, Member of the Committee on Innovation, Technology and Re-industrialisation, Member of Advisory Committee on Recycling Fund, Member of the Steering Committee on the Promotion of Electric Vehicles, and Member of HKX Advisory Committee. Prof Cheng is a Fellow of Hong Kong Institute of Engineers and also Registered Professional Engineer. Prof Cheng graduated from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, U.S.A. Department of Industrial Engineering in 1981. In February 2014, Prof Cheng was inducted into the "Hall of Fame" by the California Polytechnic University-Pomona, as the first Asian Inductee in the 75th Anniversary.

Dr Amie Lai Dr Amie Lai, Swire Properties’ Senior Sustainable Development Manager, is responsible for formulating and executing a corporate-wide sustainable development strategy for the Company’s global operations to achieve its sustainable development vision. Through engaging stakeholders, setting targets and developing corresponding action plans, she leads a team to manage the full spectrum of the Company’s environmental, social and economic impact and to integrate sustainable development into every facet of Company’s business. In her role, Amie engages and interacts with senior leaders within the Company to establish science-based targets (SBT) to align with the pathway of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, paving the way to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. She also worked on developing a green finance framework for Swire Properties’ first US$500 million green bond and HK$500 million sustainability-linked loan, responding to emerging areas of sustainability such as Climate-related Financial Disclosures aligned with TCFD, embodied carbon emissions study on building materials, and a strategic approach on resource management and circularity. Amie also led Swire Properties maintains its top listings on several global and regional sustainability indices and benchmarks– the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB), and Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index. Amie is the finalist of WorldGBC’s 2020 Asia Pacific Women in Green Building Leadership Award. She is also involved in the WorldGBC’s Embodied Carbon Primer Project Taskforce.

Mr Nigel Mattravers Nigel is the Director of ALBA Integrated Waste Solutions (Hong Kong) Limited. He is a chartered civil engineer and waste manager with more than 40 years’ international experience which has included both engineering and finance. Nigel has particular expertise in the waste and resource management sector and has been responsible for studies, design, finance, project management of numerous resource management studies and schemes in Hong Kong and United Kingdom. In Hong Kong, he has been responsible for leading many of the major resource management schemes completed to date and studies into reuse of materials as part of the circular economy.

Ms Helga Vanthournout Through Wealth of Flows Consulting, Helga brings over 20 years of professional experience helping organisations find the straightest path towards circular models—expertise from authoring critically acclaimed reports on the Circular Economy with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and other partners, and deep and broad client service in the Circular Economy and waste management space. Helga helps organisations around the globe set powerful sustainability and circular economy agendas and strategies, ensuring they fit with the organisation's "conventional" strategy setting. She facilitates executive interviews and management workshops and assures full activation of such strategies through organisation diagnostics, training, and change management programmes. Helga also develops Circular Economy pilots and prepares the subsequent roll-out and scale-up. She leads thought-provoking seminars and talks, from the board room to employee town halls to customer and partner events.

Mr Simon Ng Mr Simon Ng is Director – Policy & Research of Business Environment Council. He is responsible for BEC’s work on policy advocacy, thought leadership development, and collaborative research on various environmental issues that BEC focuses on. Trained as a geographer, Mr Ng is known for his ground-breaking work on ship emissions inventory in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta in which his collaboration with the shipping industry led to the launch of the Fair Winds Charter. He is also well regarded for his research and engagement work on walkability. |
