Business Environment Council (BEC) is saddened by the passing away of its Board Director and Membership Committee Chairman Mr Derek Smyth, who died on 12 October 2013.
Derek was a close and passionate supporter of BEC. He had provided lots of valuable guidance and leadership in the development of BEC, as well as expansion of its membership network. Derek represented Gammon Construction Limited in the BEC Board of Directors between 28 October 2004 and 1 September 2009, and again from 12 October 2011 onwards. Apart from being a Board Director, Derek also provided tremendous leadership by participating in various BEC Committees and Task Force. He chaired BEC’s Finance Committee between July 2009 and March 2012, before he became the Chairman of the Membership Committee in April 2012. During Derek’s chairmanship of the Membership Committee, BEC enjoyed a remarkable growth in its membership. Derek was also an active member of BEC Headquarters Transformation Project Task Force since March 2011 and contributed significantly in driving the progress of the project.
“It came in a great shock to BEC and all our members,” said Professor John Chai, Chairman of BEC Board. “Derek was a devoted member of the Board, and was one of the longest serving Board Directors. He epitomized a business leader of an environmental vision. Derek’s passing away is a great loss to BEC and the business community. Our condolences go to his wife, Mrs Danielle Smyth, and his family.”
