BEAM Plus in Energy Saving Plan 2015 – 2025+

Ir Dr Raymond Yau, First Vice Chairperson, BEAM Society Limited and Arup Fellow, Director, Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Limited

Environment Bureau published the Energy Saving Plan (“ESP”) for the Built Environment 2015-2025+ on 14 May 2015. As an energy saving blueprint for Hong Kong, it analyses energy use in Hong Kong and sets out the directions for achieving a reduction of Hong Kong’s energy intensity by 40% by 2025. As buildings account for about 90% of the city’s electricity consumption, energy conservation and efficiency in buildings are crucial factors in achieving the ESP. BEAM Plus, being the prevalent green building assessment tool in Hong Kong, served as a vehicle in promoting and guiding towards green building design and construction through the certification process.  Ir Dr Yau will share insights on the opportunities in BEAM Plus to echo with the Government’s initiatives in achieving the energy saving target.

Optimising Building Energy Performance Through Managing PICV in HVAC System

Mr. Alvin Chan, Regional Application Consultant, BELIMO Actuators Limited

Heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (“HVAC”) system is crucial in the design of medium to large industrial and commercial buildings as the system is responsible for controlling air temperature, humidity and fresh air intake. A properly designed HVAC system can provide a comfortable indoor environment to building users all year round. However, HVAC system accounts for a large percentage of energy use in a building. Therefore, more focus has been put on improving energy efficiency of HVAC system since an energy efficient HVAC system helps save a significant amount of electricity cost.

Mr. Alvin Chan of BELIMO Actuators Limited will talk about the ways to improve the performance of HVAC system through different Pressure Independent Control Valve (“PICV”) applications, which aims to control the flow of chilled water in order to reduce energy consumption of a chiller plant. He will also share various local and overseas case studies to illustrate how a well-designed PICV in HVAC system can achieve energy efficiency and maintain a good indoor environment at the same time.
