There has been dramatic growth in the pressure on Hong Kong’s transport infrastructure over the past years, driven by an expansion of the population coupled with economic development.
Hong Kong and its transport systems have risen to meet demand and the city boasts a world class transport system that is reliable, efficient and safe.
However, some areas of Hong Kong are prone to poor air quality, with vehicle emissions being a key source of roadside pollution. This is exacerbated by congestion which is increasingly commonplace; the average speed of a car journey in urban areas having dropped by 11% from 25.6 km/h in 2003 to 22.7 km/h in 2013 [1]. With tourism and population growth, additional demand is expected on the existing transport infrastructure. This raises concerns about Hong Kong’s transport system meeting such need without an increase in levels of carbon emissions and air pollution.
This workshop aims to develop knowledge and understanding of what Hong Kong businesses can do to reduce the emissions of their vehicles – from ordinary cars to vans, buses and trucks. It will involve communicating and sharing the environmental and financial benefits of electric vehicles and other low emission vehicles, exploring the usage of fuel additives and the benefits of blended fuels (biodiesel), the use of smart logistics tools, eco-driving practices, and behavior change approaches. The sessions will be led by a range of businesses, from Hong Kong and elsewhere.
