About the Conference
Recent devastations to life and infrastructure caused by extreme weather in coastal areas round the globe (e.g. Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy in USA, Thailand, Japan, etc.) highlight the importance, relevance and timeliness of this subject to Hong Kong.
Serious flooding and notable damage of the coastal areas of Hong Kong were caused by severe storm surge during typhoons in 1874, 1937 and 1962. The coastal flood risk was also highlighted by Typhoon Hagupit in 2008 when storm surge combined with high tides led to flooding at a number of localities. The risk could be further exacerbated by climate change and the possibility of an increase in the global mean tropical cyclone intensity. The criticality and potential impact of climate change are reinforced by the recent UN Climate Change Conference in Paris.
This conference aims to present the state-of-the-art in sustainability and resilience in respect of coastal development and management.
