Addressing Climate Risk: In Line with the Resilience Roadmap for Business – Utilities and the Built Environment

Last year, global temperatures reached 1°C above pre-industrial temperatures, half way to the dreaded 2°C rise. Hong Kong has begun to experience the impacts of climate change, with the hottest summer temperature in 2015, and this winter, the coldest temperatures in 60 years.

Extreme weather, including typhoons are expected to increase in severity, and the sea level is expected to rise creating increased risks of coastal flooding combined with flooding from heavy rainfall. Action is necessary to adapt and ensure resilience in the face of this change.

In December 2015, BEC published the Hong Kong Climate Resilience Roadmap for Business (“The Roadmap”) which seeks to provide strategic direction for key business sectors to ensure they act to adapt and ensure their resilience in the face of climate change. BEC also started a dialogue with the Government and made recommendations as to measures to complement action by business. Both our speakers today were instrumental in the development of the Roadmap.

Dr Jeanne Ng, Director – Group Sustainability at CLP Power Hong Kong Limited will present on CLP actions to ensure a resilient electricity generation and supply infrastructure. Ir Bruce Chong, Associate (Policy and Sustainability) at Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Limited will present on broader resilience issues for Hong Kong’s urban areas and the issues that property owners and managers should be taking on board.
