As the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (“COP21”) on climate change begins in Paris, BEC launches its Hong Kong Climate Resilience Roadmap for Business (“Roadmap”), developed by BEC’s Climate Change Business Forum Advisory Group (“CCBF AG”).

The Roadmap highlights the impact of climate change on Hong Kong under different scenarios – a low greenhouse gas concentration scenario and a high greenhouse gas concentration scenario. The former is expected to put the world on track to a temperature increase of around 2° C and sea level rise of about 0.6 metres by 2100. The latter, a business as usual scenario, means a temperature increase in Hong Kong of about 3 - 5.5° and about 1 metre sea level rise by 2100.

The Roadmap draws out the action that businesses need to take to ensure resilience in the face of inevitable change, as well as measures by government to facilitate effective action. It explains why resilience is essential – for our longer term prosperity and to ensure that business is able to raise finance and obtain insurance in a changing market.

It is anticipated that the Roadmap will prompt business to think ahead and begin a process of long-term adaptation as well as broader contingency planning, both of which are essential for resilience.  It sets out recommendations for business as well as measures which government could take to complement action by business. It suggests that acting together it is possible to enhance our level of resilience, but climate change mitigation remains vital to ensure this.

We are pleased that HKSAR Government Under Secretary for the Environment, Ms Christine Loh, and Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Mr Chi-ming Shun will attend the launch event as officiating guests, and that Mr Eric Chong, Chair of CCBF AG and President of Siemens Ltd Hong Kong will speak about the report.

You are invited to attend the launch, which will provide an opportunity to put questions direct to members of CCBF AG Steering Committee as to the recommendations of the Roadmap, and engage in a dialogue as to action that is needed for adaptation and resilience.
