There is a global consensus that global temperature rise should be no more than 2°C from pre-industrial levels to avoid unmanageable climate change. Governments have set country targets. Hong Kong has done the same: a 65-70% carbon intensity reduction by 2030, to be reviewed and improved on every 5 years.
To achieve these long term goals, businesses must also develop strategies for change which include long term targets for 2030 and beyond. Through these strategies, companies demonstrate leadership and make the most of new business opportunities. Various methodologies have been developed to help set targets. However, setting targets is complex and presents challenges.
This workshop, as part of BEC Climate Change Business Forum Advisory Group’s Low Carbon HK project, will explain the methodologies for setting targets. It will also involve discussion and co-creation of approaches for sustainability officers or those with a sustainability brief to initiate this work and to obtain the buy-in of their internal and external stakeholders to this process of developing and implementing long term targets.
- Explain the business case for setting carbon reduction targets
- Introduce the different methodologies in setting carbon reduction targets
- Involve a process of co-creation as approaches and strategies for initiating the process and building support within your company and with external stakeholders
- It will draw on BEC CCBF AG’s Report: Influencing Up, Down and Across: http://bec.org.hk/ccfb/en-us/downloads/513-Up__Down_and_Across_-_From_Sustainability_Professional_to_Change_Agent_-_8_April_2013.pdf
