Hong Kong, 28 July 2017 - Business Environment Council Limited 商界環保協會有限公司 (“BEC”) successfully held the “Fostering Sustainable Consumption for Hong Kong Business and the Community” Programme Launch and Mini-Expo today at BEC Auditorium. Over 100 representatives from various industries gathered together to support the new BEC’s initiative. The 18-months programme is funded by the Sustainable Development Fund, aiming to promote options and behaviours of sustainable consumption in the community and the business sector in Hong Kong.
CEO of BEC, Mr Adam Koo said, “The business sector has played a significant role in promoting sustainable consumption. Many large corporations has implemented strategies and policies on sustainable procurement, yet sustainable consumption is still a challenging goal for SMEs and the general public, as the market lacks the information, knowledge and tools for its development. Seeing the necessities, BEC has launched this programme to establish a one-stop resources centre in facilitating and encouraging enterprises and the public to support sustainable consumption.”
Various mini-expo booths were also set up in the venue by local and overseas certification bodies. They delivered first-hand information on certifications and application procedures to presented business representatives.
According to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”) identified by the United Nations in 2015, responsible production and consumption is a major course of development, for which the society needs to adapt to a more sustainable consumption pattern. In Hong Kong, the Consumer Council released a research report in 2016, stating that “not enough information” and “not easy to acquire” are the two major factors prohibiting the practice of sustainable consumption.
In view of this, BEC hopes to raise public and businesses’ awareness and drive behavioural changes of enterprises and the public through a series of programme items, including a Guide on sustainable consumption, a recognition scheme, an online product directory, a mobile application and a series of roving exhibitions. The recognition scheme has already started since early July and is now opened for applications. Over 70 enterprises and suppliers has already joined this programme. Qualified enterprises and product suppliers will be recognised as “Sustainable Consumption Enterprise” and “Sustainable Product Supplier”, and suppliers’ product information will be listed on the online platform, which aims to serve as a source of sustainable consumption information for different parties.
Other programme activities will also kick off soon. The first of the 6 roving exhibitions will start in September. Exhibition guide will be arranged to introduce the concept of sustainable consumption to the public. The mobile app, “Guide on Sustainable Consumption Products and Services”, will also be available by then to serve as a convenient search engine to search for products and retailers related to environmental protection, conservation, organics, antibiotic-free poultry, fair trade and social enterprises.
