Hong Kong, 16 May 2017 - Business Environment Council Limited 商界環保協會有限公司 (“BEC”) successfully hosted EnviroSeries Conference at JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong on 16 May 2017. Setting the theme on “Circular Economy: Towards a Resource Efficient Hong Kong - Managing Waste, Driving Growth”, the Conference attracted over 150 participants, including policy makers, industry experts, business leaders and academics, to examine the opportunities, strategies, innovative technologies and collaborative initiatives in promoting a circular economy in Hong Kong.
Mr KS Wong, Secretary for the Environment of the Hong Kong SAR Government delivered the keynote presentation to share the Government’s policy directions in waste management. Overseas speaker Mr Alexander Verbeek, Former Strategic Policy Advisor on Global issues, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands shared his views on European approach to circular economy.
In addition, three sessions of plenary discussions were delivered by a strong panel of speakers, including Ir Dr Bruce Chong from Ove Arup and Partners Hong Kong, Ms Rachel Fleishman from BASF East Asia Regional Headquarters Limited, Prof Jonathan Wong from Hong Kong Baptist University, Mr Edwin Keh from The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel, Mr Nigel Mattravers from ALBA Integrated Waste Solutions (Hong Kong) Limited, Mr SK Wu from Alliance Construction Materials Limited, Mr Mike Kilburn from Airport Authority Hong Kong, Mr Tom Uiterwaal from Reconergy (Hong Kong) Limited. Also participated in today’s event were BEC Board Directors, Prof Daniel M. Cheng from Dunwell Enviro-Tech (Holdings) Limited, Mr Wilson Kwong from Jardine Engineering Corporation Limited and Mr Victor Kwong from Towngas.
The Conference consisted of three plenary sessions, including:
- Rethinking waste and discovering the value of waste in the circular economy,
- A sectoral analysis: from textiles to electronic and building materials - from waste prevention to extending lifespan of the resources used,
- The final step - waste to energy in the circular economy and implications for Hong Kong.
This year, BEC celebrates its 25th anniversary. Over the past quarter century, BEC have proactively promoted environmental excellence through engaging the business sector, the Government and the wider community. The EnviroSeries Conference is a cross-sector platform for government officials, policy makers, business leaders, and local and international experts to exchange innovative ideas and address key sustainability issues.
