31 March 2014: Constitutional Development Forum for the Environmental Industry

About 100 business leaders, professionals and practitioners from the environmental industry joined the Forum, in which the Chief Secretary for Administration Mrs Carrie Lam, and the Secretary for the Environment Mr K S Wong, discussed the framework under the Basic Law for the “Methods for Selecting the Chief Executive in 2017 and for Forming the Legislative Council in 2016”, and encouraged the audience to provide their views in response to the Consultation Document on this important issue.

27 March 2014: BEC Leadership Networking Series

About 40 BEC members and guests gathered in this event to learn about the development of green commercial buildings.

Mr Kevin Edmunds, Senior Manager - Sustainability, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, introduced various green design layouts and focuses in Hong Kong Science Park Phase 3. Then, Mr Gary Hui, Senior Sustainability Design Manager, Leigh & Orange Limited, shared some recent examples of green building development in Hong Kong and the ways to reduce energy consumption in the office environment.

BEC Headquarters Building Received the Carbon"Less" Certificate

BEC headquarters building recently received the Carbon"Less" 10% Certificate under the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence. The Carbon"Less" Certificate scheme aims to recognise buildings or organisations that achieve a verified absolute reduction of overall carbon emissions.

 

BEC IEE Upcoming Programme Highlights

BEC IEE organises the “ISO 14001 Internal Auditing” on 28 and 29 April 2014 for companies that are interested in learning the requirements of ISO 14001 standard, and how to conduct a successful internal audit of an environmental management system and produce audit findings.

HR Excellence Awards 2014 by HKIHRM

As the Associate Assessor and Supporting Organisation of the HR Excellence Awards 2014, BEC is inviting companies to join this Awards programme to showcase outstanding people management strategies and practices.

Organised by the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management (HKIHRM), the HR Excellence Awards 2014 aims to recognise organisations’ efforts in human resources management. The Awards programme is open to organisations of all sizes and types with operations in Hong Kong, Macau, Mainland China and Asia-Pacific Region. The First Upcycling Workshop for Corporate Employees - "Upcycling the Tai Po Community Project"

Funded by HKSAR Sustainable Development Fund and partnered with the Hong Kong Federation of Women's Centres, BEC is organising a community-outreach programme entitled “Upcycling the Tai Po Community Project” from December 2013 to May 2015. The Programme aims to train women in Tai Po District how to make upcycling products. In return, these trained participants will be the trainers of corporate employees in the production of upcycling items.

The first workshop was successfully held on 19 March 2014 for employees of Kai Shing Properties Limited. In a fun-filled environment, the employees learnt to make soap with used household cooking oil.

EPD Glass Bottle Recycling Programme for Housing Estates

To better promote glass bottle recycling in Hong Kong and to pave way for the implementation of the Mandatory Producer Responsibility Scheme, the Environmental Protection Department has commissioned BEC to organise and manage the glass bottle recycling programmes in Sai Kung, Tuen Mun and North District from January 2014 to June 2015. Over 80 housing estates in these 3 districts have already participated in this Programme, enabling their residents to recycle glass bottles.

All housing estates and residential buildings in these 3 districts with property management office are welcome to join this Programme. For more details about the Programme, please contact Mr Jonathan Li  (T 2784 3921 | E em_admin@bec.org.hk).

In this event, Mr Toshiaki Takahashi from Ricoh Asia Pacific Operation will share their environmental related work and experiences on supply chain management, and the latest office eco-friendly technologies, in order to help businesses go green. Dr Peter Lee, Chief Technology Officer, Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Limited will be the second speaker and will share the latest technologies about Indoor Air Quality from a research perspective.

10 April 2014: BEC Policy Dialogue Series: Fuel Mix - Workshop III “Government Consultation Paper on Fuel Mix”

BEC is hosting a four-part Policy Dialogue Series from March to May, regarding the options for Hong Kong’s future electricity production and fuel mix.

Built on the previous fuel mix recommendations which were outlined in BEC's Submission on the 2014  C E Policy Address, BEC has focused in the two workshops held in March, on topics related to: nuclear power, importing of electricity from Guangdong, and renewable and conventional generation in Hong Kong.

In the coming workshop on 10 April, BEC invites Mr Donald Ng, Principal Assistant Secretary (Electricity Reviews),Environment Bureau, to introduce the “Future Fuel Mix for Electricity Generation” Consultation Document. Participants can gain a better understanding of the consultation paper and to express their opinions regarding the future fuel mix policy in Hong Kong. Subsequent to these workshops, a public forum is scheduled in May 2014.

1 – 4 June 2014: Group Visit to Singapore

BEC is organising a Group Visit to Singapore from 1 to 4 June 2014, for the purpose of providing a better understanding on managing environmental issues in Singapore.

The itinerary covers visits to various waste management facilities and major environmental exhibition and conferences. Members will also have the opportunity to meet and share experiences with key players of the local waste management industry.

Scania Driver Competitions 2014 to be Launched

Thousands of truck drivers around the world are invited to participate in the Scania Driver Competitions 2014 – one of the world’s largest truck driving and training event. This year, Scania aims to attract more than 85,000 truck drivers from 40 countries.

BEC Corporate Member Scania (Hong Kong) Limited is going to launch the local competition on 22 April 2014. Through this competition, Scania is looking for another year of success in increasing road safety awareness, reducing fuel consumption and supporting Hong Kong moves toward a greener city.
