BEC Roundtable Dialogue: Green Buildings & Sustainable Technologies Concluded on 6 June

Over 50 senior executives from the private, social and public sectors gathered at this Roundtable to explore challenges and next steps in creating greener, more efficient and sustainable buildings for Hong Kong with overseas and local industry experts at two panel sessions.

Our speakers have presented key highlights on global research and best practices in pursuit of green buildings; case studies that are relevant to Hong Kong in this journey; latest and upcoming R&D in this subject and an overview on the Buildings Energy Efficiency Ordinance (Cap 610). Special thanks to Siemens for their generous support in this successful event.




Beyond Green IT Luncheon

Over 60 senior executives and IT experts joined the Beyond Green IT Luncheon that was held in Club Lusitano on 25 May. Keynote Speaker and VIP, Mr Tony Wong, Assistant Government Chief Information Officer (Acting) of OGCIO shared with us Government’s green data centre practices. Other speakers from IBM and Hong Kong Jockey Club also shared their experiences of how green IT solutions contribute to business growth. The speaker from Hong Kong Productivity Council introduced some environmental initiatives that promote good environmental practices Special thanks to IBM China/ Hong Kong Limited for sponsoring this event.

HSBC Living Business Capacity Building Events

To provide businesses with the benefits and know-how of supply chain sustainability, as well as experience sharing from large corporations and their suppliers and contractors, two Supply Chain Sustainability Seminars will be held in June 2012:

Seminar 1: SMEs Business Opportunities under Sustainable Supply Chain Management

Through understanding the supply chain management approach and requirements of large corporations, SMEs can gain insight on how to stay competitive by practising corporate sustainability.

HSBC Living Business Capacity Building Events – Company Visit to HACTL

To facilitate local SMEs in understanding how our world-leading air cargo terminal operator practices supply chain sustainability, the HSBC Living Business Capacity Building Event organized a visit to Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited for about 25 participants from local SMEs on 1 June.

Speakers from the HK Institute of Value Management and the Government’s Architectural and Services Department will discuss the basis and major principles of VM, and how it could be applied practically to create sustainable value for organizations and their stakeholders through eliminating unnecessary cost and resources consumption without affecting the targeted service quality.



18 Jun – BEC Professional Talk ESG Reporting and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) in Hong Kong

This talk will briefly review recent developments related to the Hang Seng Sustainability Index and the HKEx ESG Reporting Guide, and then explain in more detail the background to the CDP and why it is becoming increasingly important for companies in Hong Kong to disclose information to investors about climate change.

25 Jun - Site Visit to MTR Depot at Kowloon Bay

The Kowloon Bay Depot provides a base for the 1500 volt DC electric multiple unit (EMU) for trains operation. It also contains the facilities for stabling, cleaning, preventive and corrective maintenance, as well as cranes and jacking facilities for replacing the heavy equipment. MTR representatives will introduce their environmental measures, including their train washer and noise mitigation measures.

Green Residential Development Design Competition Attracts Good Quality Entries

On 19 May, ‘BEC Low-carbon Home’ 2011-2012 Programme (LCH) staged an award presentation ceremony for its Green Residential Development Design Competition. Professor John Chai, Chairman of BEC, Ms Samantha Yu, Deputy Head of Agile Property Holdings Limited, key sponsor of the LCH Programme, presented prizes to the winners in front of some 140 guests, students and friends.

The winning project is designed by five Year 2 students of Associate of Science in Architectural Studies, City University of HK. Having over 85% of green coverage, the design is characterised by a green hub which provides recreational space for residents and helps reduce summer heat. Orientation of houses are carefully planned to capture maximum natural sunlight and ventilation.

The results of the competition are:
