Over the past few years, Hong Kong has taken substantial strides in achieving marine emissions reductions. Ship owners took the lead through the Fair Winds Charter, a commitment to the use of low sulphur fuel for ocean-going vessels (OGVs) berthing in Hong Kong. This ultimately led to Emissions Control Areas in the Pearl River Delta and other Mainland ports. Recently, the HKSAR Government has proposed to put in place measures so that, as part of the Mainland’s new emissions control areas, ships will be required to use low sulphur fuel not only at berth but in Hong Kong’s waters by January 2019.
This raises the question – what’s next? What else can and should be done to further improve air quality and maintain low carbon emissions in the busy marine areas around Hong Kong? And how can Hong Kong position itself ahead of others to capture business advantage?
This seminar aims to share the latest information on changes worldwide and in neighbouring port cities, and to exchange views not only within the shipping sector, ferry companies and ports, but amongst all those businesses with an interest in reducing marine emissions and improving air quality. It will cover the following areas:
- The current levels of and sources of marine emissions
- Developments at an international level and in other Emissions Control Areas
- The next steps that can be taken to further reduce emissions whilst securing Hong Kong’s position as a world class port
