In a high-density vertical city, building design plays a large role in reducing waste. Architects in New York City led the development of Zero Waste Design Guidelines for new and existing buildings to help the city reduce waste. Now leaders in sustainable design from Hong Kong, Singapore and NYC are collaborating to share design strategies, case studies and policy suggestions that can help high density cities reach zero waste goals. Come hear architect Ms Clare Miflin, who led the NYC process, in discussion with leaders of sustainable design in Hong Kong, as we begin this collaborative project.

Keynote Speaker Ms Clare Miflin, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Certified Passive House Designer, Certified Biomimicry Professional Clare is an architect and systems thinker with experience designing buildings to the highest environmental standards. At Kiss + Cathcart, Architects she helped develop their concept of “productive” architecture – which provides human, ecological and economic benefits by integrating systems - from solar panels to hydroponics - into architecture. Clare led the development of the AIANY Zero Waste Design Guidelines through a multidisciplinary collaborative process. The Guidelines serve as resource and inspiration for architects and developers to help cities reach their zero waste goals, and are being disseminated and implemented through the Center for Zero Waste Design. Clare has also founded a consultancy – ThinkWoven – to develop strategies to weave urban systems into ecosystems. Clare is Co-chair of the AIANY’s Committee on the Environment; a board member of BiomimicryNYC, a member of NYC’s Living Building Collaborative and Sustainability Coordinator for her local food cooperative.

Dr Amie Lai Amie is the Senior Sustainable Development Manager of Swire Properties. She is responsible for formulating and executing a corporate-wide sustainable development strategy for the Company’s global operations to achieve its sustainable development vision. Through target setting and development of corresponding actions plans, she leads a team to manage the full spectrum of the Company’s environmental, social and economic impacts. Her work includes developing a green finance framework for Swire Properties’ first US$500 million green bond and HK$500 million sustainability-linked loan, working on emerging areas of sustainability such as TCFD-aligned Climate-related Financial Disclosures, science-based targets (SBTs), sustainable procurement, and a strategic approach on resource management and circularity.

Ir Dr Cary Chan, JP Ir Dr Cary Chan, JP is a professional engineer and is currently the Executive Director of Hong Kong Green Building Council with the vision of driving the green building agenda for Hong Kong. Cary is regarded as an expert on building energy efficiency by the industry. He pioneered “Knowledge Based Energy Management” in Hong Kong back in the late 90s. Using existing buildings as living laboratories, Cary has carried out a lot of researches relating to the enhancement of building energy efficiency. Up to now Cary has published over 25 papers sharing his knowledge with the industry. A number of his work have won international awards, which includes Client of the Year - Low Carbon Operation Award by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers in 2010. In 2018, Cary initiated a Memorandum of Collaboration to promote retro-commissioning in the Greater Bay Area together with 6 other signatories including the Government and Tsing Hua University. Cary played a key role in establishing Hong Kong’s Green building assessment tool back in 1995. Since then he has been playing a leadership role on sustainable buildings within Hong Kong and abroad. Over the years, Cary was active members to over 10 advisory councils and committees of the Government of HKSAR and he was appointed Justice of the Peace (JP) by the government in 2017 with his immense contribution to Hong Kong community. Cary was being awarded Honorary Doctorate by University College of Estate Management in December 2019.

Ms Fiona Sykes Fiona is an Associate with Arup in the East Asia Resource and Waste Management Team. She is based in Hong Kong and has been working in Hong Kong, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines. Fiona is a Chartered Resource and Waste Manager, specializing in multi-disciplinary projects including waste infrastructure, airports, hospitals, and masterplan developments. She has extensive experience in Hong Kong and South East Asia with clients such as potential investors, developers, development banks and governments. Within Arup, Fiona is a member of the SDG working group and circular economy skills network which focus on embedding sustainability and circularity more deeply within projects. Outside work Fiona advocates low waste and low environmental impact activities.

Ms Jackie Luk, AIA, LEED AP Jackie Luk is an Associate Principal at Kohn Pedersen Fox, and has been practicing architecture for more than 15 years in the United States, China and Hong Kong. Her most recent project Kerry Qianhai, Shenzhen is a 400,000-square-meter, mixed use development of residential, office, retail, hospitality with a total of eleven buildings, and ample green space reserved for the public. She is also working on a large scale residential development in Cambodia, built upon a vision to create a smart eco city of over 2 million-square-meter for living. Prior to joining KPF Hong Kong, Jackie worked at Steven Holl Architects in New York. She is a registered Architect in the State of New York and a LEED AP.

Mr M.K. Leung M.K. is an award-winning architect and laureate of the first Singapore Institute of Architects-Uniseal G-Architect Award in 2014, a director of HKGBC since 2016, Panel Chair of Site Aspects of Technical Review Committee of BEAM Society Limited and a member of Green Building Faculty of HKGBC since 2012. He is highly recognized for his specialized knowledge and integrated design skills in sustainable building design for his projects, including high-performance new buildings, green retrofit of existing buildings, sustainability master planning and research. His projects include CIC ZCB, the first zero carbon building in Hong Kong; the new Chai Wan campus for the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) which was honored with the Special Architectural Award – Architectural Sustainability of the HKIA Annual Awards 2018/19; and research studies for the government.

Mr Simon Ng Mr Simon Ng is Director – Policy & Research of Business Environment Council. He is responsible for BEC’s work on policy advocacy, thought leadership development, and collaborative research on various environmental issues that BEC focuses on. Trained as a geographer, Mr Ng is known for his ground-breaking work on ship emissions inventory in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta in which his collaboration with the shipping industry led to the launch of the Fair Winds Charter. He is also well regarded for his research and engagement work on walkability. |
