23 June 2016: Energy Efficiency Technologies & Services – Seminar and Mini-expo

The half-day event includes two parts: seminar and mini-expo. It will provide a series of talks on the introduction of various energy efficiency technologies and services, and also serve as a platform for business leaders and industry players to share ideas and experience with technology and service providers. On the other hand, BEC members and other service and technology providers may grasp the opportunity to showcase their technologies and practices to businesses and industry players.

3 June 2016: BEC Industry Visit to Green Facilities in Mainland China

BEC will host a one-day visit to Mainland China to learn more about the waste management project developed by one of the major players in China’s environmental management industry, and energy efficiency measures implemented by a sizable container terminal operator.

The group will visit China Everbright International Limited’s first household waste-to-energy project in Boluo, Huizhou City, Guangdong Province. The project is developed as an environmental-friendly ecological park featuring environmental education, environmental culture and eco-tourism. The group will also visit Yantian International Container Terminals to know more about the green features that have been introduced into the terminal, including shore power system, liquefied natural gas internal trucks and electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes.

6 June 2016: Launch Event – GRI G4 and HKEX ESG Reporting Guide Linkage Document

At the event, Global Reporting Initiative (“GRI”) will launch the document entitled “Linking G4 and the HKEX ESG Reporting Guide”, which aims to help companies understand how they can best use GRI G4 Guidelines and Hong Kong Exchange and Clearing Limited’s ESG Reporting Guide to report their sustainability performance without duplicating their efforts. BEC has rendered its support to the publication of the document with sponsorship made by BEC members CLP Power Hong Kong Limited and NWS Holdings Limited.

Speakers and panelists will discuss the requirements for enhancing corporate transparency and accountability, as well as how to cope with increasing advocacy for more legislation and policy required by government bodies, market regulators, and financial institutions worldwide.

As you might be aware, this year the GRI G4 Guidelines will transition to GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards (“GRI Standards”). In addition to the launch of the document, representatives from GRI will be present to answer any questions in relation to this transition.

13 May 2016: BEC Industry Visit to Baguio Waste Management and Destruction Centre

During the visit to Baguio Waste Management and Destruction Centre, participants learnt about the waste management process, such as separating waste into different types of recyclable materials, shredding the materials into debris and baling them for further processing. Participants appreciated the host arranging an informative presentation and a guided tour for them.

19 May 2016: BEC EnviroSeries Conference – A Resilient and Low Carbon Hong Kong – Transforming Awareness into Actions

BEC EnviroSeries Conference, entitled “A Resilient and Low Carbon Hong Kong – Transforming Awareness into Actions”, was successfully held on 19 May 2016. The Conference attracted over 150 participants, including policy makers, industry experts, business leaders and academics, to discuss strategies and plans, which would help transform Hong Kong into a low carbon city and support a global shift to net zero emissions.

Ms Christine Loh, Under Secretary for the Environment, delivered the keynote presentation to share the Government’s policy directions in combating climate change and reducing carbon emissions and set the scene for the robust discussions of the day.

26 May 2016: BEC Leadership Networking Series

Entitled “Addressing Climate Risk: In Line with the Resilience Roadmap for Business – Utilities and the Built Environment”, the event focused on the actions by business sector to adapt to climate resilience in the face of climate change.

Dr Jeanne Ng, Director – Group Sustainability of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited talked about actions taken by CLP to ensure a resilient electricity generation and supply infrastructure. Ir Bruce Chong, Associate (Policy and Sustainability) of Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Limited shared broader resilience issues for Hong Kong’s urban areas and the issues that property owners and managers should be taking on board.

Application for HSBC Living Business Awards 2016 Starts Now

Since its launch in 2004, the HSBC Living Business Programme has been helping local small and medium enterprises (“SMEs”) become more competitive and productive by incorporating socially and environmentally sustainable practices into their business operations. The Programme provides a learning platform for SMEs to understand the best practices in corporate sustainability and offers recognition to SMEs with outstanding performance.

The HSBC Living Business Awards 2016, one of the major activities under the Programme, is now inviting companies with no more than 250 full time employees to enter the Awards. On the other hand, companies with commitment on supply chain sustainability are also invited to be “HSBC Living Business Sustainable Business Partners” by nominating at least five of their suppliers or subsidiaries to submit applications for the Awards.

To enhance knowledge in sustainable practices of SMEs, the Sustainable Business Partners Sharing Session was held under the Programme on 24 May, and another Session will be held on 8 June. For details, please visit http://bec.org.hk/events-current/hsbc-living-business-awards-2016.

“BEC Biodiversity Ambassador Training Programme: Marine Biodiversity Conservation” – Roving Exhibitions and Closing Ceremony in June

Following the first roving exhibition cum BEC Biodiversity Ambassadors’ sharing session in Tin Shui Wai, BEC will organise another two roving exhibitions cum sharing sessions on 4 and 5 June at Ocean Park Hong Kong, as well as on 18 and 19 June in Tseung Kwan O. The Programme’s Closing Ceremony will also be held on 18 June during the exhibition at Park Central, Tseung Kwan O. You are welcome to visit the exhibitions and join the Closing Ceremony to learn more about the Programme highlights and achievements thus far.

2016 Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence is Now Open for Application

As one of the organisers of the 2016 Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (“HKAEE”), BEC is now inviting local companies and organisations to join this annual landmark event of the environmental sector in Hong Kong. Sponsored by the Environment and Conservation Fund and launched by Environmental Campaign Committee, the HKAEE encourages businesses and organisations to adopt green management, and presents them with an opportunity to benchmark and recognise their commitments towards environmental protection.

MTR launches its 16th Sustainability Report

MTR Corporation launched its 16th Sustainability Report on 24 May 2016 with the theme “5 Million Stories” highlighting on average more than 5.5 million passengers it carries every day. The report features the stories of around 24 stakeholders representing their different experiences, views and expectations of MTR in Hong Kong, with 11 staff stories of how MTR is proactively responding to some of the issues that are of concern to stakeholders. Eight additional stories from its rail subsidiaries are also included in the report.

As a pioneer in sustainability reporting in Hong Kong and the region, starting from its first publication in 2001, MTR has continuously provided an update of its sustainability performance.

A shorter summary report is now available, as well as a dedicated website providing more details on MTR’s overall sustainability performance: http://www.mtr.com.hk/sustainability_report. The report is available in both English and Traditional Chinese.

"BEC Members Corner" is dedicated to BEC members for the purpose of introducing their recent achievements, success stories, innovative ideas or solutions on environmental sustainability. Members are invited to provide us with an English write-up with about 150 words, which BEC reserves the rights of editing and publishing. The submission deadline for the next E-newsletter is 24 June 2016 (Friday).

BEC IEE Training Courses

BEC Institute for Environmental Education ("BEC IEE") will organise various environmental training courses during June to August 2016 as follows:

Towards Sustainability – Best Practice for Sustainable Procurement (3 June 2016) – Sustainable procurement is the process of buying goods and services of a business in a way that meets the needs of the business while brings benefits to the environment at the same time. Sustainable procurement has become one of the key components among businesses in achieving sustainability. This 3-hour course is suitable for those who are responsible for procurement policy as well as those who engage in procurement on a day-to-day basis. Participants will learn how to implement best practices of sustainable procurement in business operations with a straightforward and cost-effective manner.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Management & Improvement (4th Intake) (16 June 2016) – The course covers an overview of IAQ, different chemical and biological components that affect IAQ, and effective ways to manage and improve IAQ. In the interest of promoting awareness of IAQ, BEC members who enroll before 2 June 2016 will enjoy buy one get one free course offer for their staff members who join the course together.

Introduction to Principles and Quantification Methods for Organisational and Product Carbon Footprint (20 June 2016) – Businesses and community become more aware of the impacts brought by climate changes and climate mitigation methods. In order to set up a long-term climate resilience roadmap, it is necessary to have a clear understanding of the principle and quantification methods of carbon missions in both organisational and product level. This course will introduce the differences between principles and quantification methods of organisational footprint and those of product carbon footprint, and also the relevant international standards to be applied.

GRI Certified Training on Sustainability Reporting G4 (2nd Intake) (28 and 29 June 2016) – Global Reporting Initiative (“GRI”) is one of the widely used frameworks for sustainability reporting. Reporting organisations disclose their most critical impacts on the areas of environment, society and economy by using the GRI Guidelines. Jointly organised by SGS Hong Kong Limited and BEC IEE, this certified training programme provides the essential knowledge on GRI G4 reporting, and introduces the five phrases of GRI sustainability reporting process. It also provides hands-on and step-by-step instructions for the participants to apply GRI G4 with interactive learning through case studies.

Best Practices for Energy Management (30 June 2016) – Hong Kong currently has over 40,000 existing buildings that account for 92% of total electricity demand in the territory. Good practices in energy management are necessary for reducing electricity consumption and saving costs. This 3-hour course offers an overview on current practices for achieving effective energy management.

Towards Sustainability – Case Sharing on First Commercial Building to achieve BEAM Plus Provisional Platinum Rating (Existing Buildings) – BEC Headquarters (2nd Intake) (7 July 2016) – BEC Headquarters is the first commercial building in Hong Kong which has achieved the Platinum Rating of Provisional Assessment under BEAM Plus Existing Buildings ‘EB’ (V1.2). This course introduces some essential knowledge of design, planning and implementation for transforming an existing building to a certified green building. In the interest of promoting awareness of green building, BEC members who enroll before 2 June 2016 can enjoy buy one get one free course offer for their staff members who join the course together.

Best Practices for Waste Reduction and Management in Hong Kong (2nd Intake) (18 July 2016) – This 6-hour course will provide an overview of waste reduction and management in Hong Kong, and will review the roles that businesses and individuals can play in improving waste management and reduction.

ISO 14001:2015 Internal Auditing (3rd Intake) (21 and 22 July 2016) – The course is opened to companies that are interested in obtaining the knowledge and skills to fulfill the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard. The course will also introduce how to conduct a successful internal audit of an environmental management system and produce audit findings.

BEAM Plus Familiarisation Training for Contractors (6th Intake) (3 and 4 August 2016) – This course offers a comprehensive training covering the key areas that contractors need to know for managing their BEAM Plus responsibilities.
